Prosthesis
Prosthesis or prosthodontics is one of the branches of dentistry which deals with restoration and maintenance of oral function. This is done by replacing missing teeth and associated soft and hard tissues with prostheses (crowns, bridges, dentures). These may be fixed or removable, or may be supported and retained by implants.
A prosthodontist is a specialist dentist who deals with the replacement of missing teeth and associated oral or jaw structures. Thus, bridges, dental prostheses or prostheses will act as replacements. The prosthodontist receives additional training of three years or more after dental school to specialize in this field.
Prosthodontics or prosthetics is a broad specialty and its subspecialties are:
– Fixed prostheses,– Removable prostheses,
– Maxillofacial prosthodontics,
– Implant prosthodontics.
